Bamboo Matcha Whisk
£14.95
A bamboo matcha whisk, or chasen (茶筅), is an essential tool in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, used specifically for whisking and frothing matcha powder into a smooth, foamy tea. Crafted from a single piece of bamboo, the bamboo matcha whisk is intricately carved and split into numerous thin tines. The structure of the bamboo matcha whisk is quite distinctive. The many tines are arranged in a circular pattern, with an outer ring of tines that fans outward, and a smaller, more compact cluster in the middle. This arrangement is ideal for mixing and aerating matcha, helping to break up any clumps and create a creamy texture.
When it comes to making your Ceremonial Matcha Green tea it’s important to use the right tools – our traditional Japanese Bamboo Matcha Whisk is hand-made from quality bamboo, following the centuries old technique. Before first use you should also ‘bloom your matcha whisk’ – To bloom a matcha whisk, soak the whisk in warm water for 1–2 minutes before use. This softens the tines and helps them gently open up, making them more flexible and less prone to breaking. After soaking, shake off the excess water, and the whisk is ready for preparing matcha. Always dry on a matcha whisk stand, or upright – never flat or it will permanently lose its shape.
Brewing Matcha…
When it comes to making a Ceremonial Matcha tea, there are a few implements which will help you along the way… Firstly, the Matcha Whisk is crucial to getting the perfect smooth frothy tea. Pair with the whisk stand to help the bamboo fibres hold their shape. Then there’s a Matcha spoon to measure the perfect spoonful and a dedicated Matcha bowl which can be very useful.
