Between Years: A 12 Day Tea Ritual for Renewal…

We want to let you know about a special tea ritual we’re is running this festive season… ‘Between Years’. The days between Christmas and early New Year have always felt like their own strange little pocket of time. The rush has slowed, the year is almost done, and everything feels a bit fuzzy around the edges. Are we working? Resting? Finishing the chocolates? It’s a beautiful kind of limbo.

In old Celtic and Scottish folklore, these in-between days were known as The Omen Days, a time to pause, pay attention, and read small signs from the world as hints of what the year ahead might hold. Each day was thought to represent one month of the coming year. A bright sunrise might promise good fortune; a sudden storm could be a warning to prepare. It was less about prediction and more about tuning into the horizon, noticing what’s stirring in nature and in ourselves before the new year begins.

We loved that idea and wanted to bring it into the present day with a modern twist (and, naturally, a cup of tea). Over the 12 days from 26 Dec 2025 to 6 Jan 2026, we’ll be sharing short daily practice with gentle reflections, prompts, and a featured tea, a little invitation to slow down, sip mindfully, and set intentions for the months ahead. Think of it as a tea-infused ritual to help you step into the new year with presence and ease.

Below you’ll find an overview of the 12 Omen Days we’ll explore together. Each day holds a theme, an elemental focus, and a simple reflection to guide you.

We’ve reimagined this ancient practice through The Tea Mind, blending Celtic wisdom, the Chinese Five Elements, and the art of mindful tea drinking. Together they form a simple rhythm:

Pause. Rebalance. Thrive.

Erica will be taking a deeper dive on each day on The Tea Mind Substack. You’ll also find invitations to join our Opening Circle (26 Dec) and Closing Circle (6 Jan) – live online spaces to brew together, reflect, and set gentle intentions for 2026.

As you move through these twelve days, remember: This is not about prediction. It’s about presence. Your “omens” might come as a scent, a phrase, a colour, a feeling. Let them be.

The 12 Days Between Years…

26 December – Begin Again
First Omen: Seeds of the Year Ahead
Element: Wood (growth, renewal)

Focus: Pause and create space to begin anew
While your tea brews, take a moment to breathe deeply and imagine yourself clearing space for something fresh to grow. Ask yourself: what are you ready to release so that new life can emerge? Let that question steep as slowly as your tea, and notice what comes to mind.

27 December – Ground & Breathe
Second Omen: Roots and Foundations
Element: Earth (stability, support)

Focus: Rebalance and feel rooted in presence
As your leaves unfurl, feel your feet steady beneath you and notice the ground that holds you. Consider: what anchors you when life moves fast? Let your breath deepen and your shoulders drop as you wait for your tea to infuse.

28 December – Listen Within
Third Omen: Dreams and Intuition
Element: Water (stillness, reflection)

Focus: Pause and soften into listening
As your tea swirls in the pot, invite a little quiet into your morning. Ask yourself: what does quiet sound like inside you? Let the stillness expand, and listen to what your intuition is whispering beneath the noise.

29 December – Gratitude Glow
Fourth Omen: Tune into your Inner Light
Element: Metal (reflection, gratitude)

Focus: Thrive through gratitude and warmth
As you watch the steam rise, let it remind you of warmth and light. Reflect: what moments have lit you up this year? Allow gratitude to move through you with each sip, softening your heart and brightening your outlook.

30 December – Simplicity
Fifth Omen: Purity and Refinement
Element: Metal (clarity, letting go)

Focus: Rebalance and clear space
As your tea brews, take stock of what feels cluttered in your life, both inside and out. Ask yourself: what can you simplify to make more room for what truly matters? With each sip, imagine yourself creating a little more space for calm and clarity.

31 December – Threshold
Sixth Omen: Standing Between Worlds
Element: Fire–Earth Balance (illumination and grounding)

While the year tips toward midnight, hold your cup gently and feel the balance between what has been and what is to come. Ask yourself: what are you stepping toward as you cross this threshold? Let your answer unfold slowly, like tea leaves opening in hot water.

1 January – Pause & Presence
Seventh Omen: Renewal and Clear Vision
Element: Water (refresh and cleanse)

Focus: Begin again with clarity
As you brew your first tea of the year, pause to feel the freshness of the day. Consider: what do you wish to feel more of this year? Let that feeling guide your first steps into the new beginning that is already unfolding.

2 January – Vision & Intention
Eighth Omen: Growth and Alignment
Element: Wood (direction, purpose)

While your tea steeps, close your eyes and picture the path ahead. Ask yourself: what one word will guide your year? Let that word settle into you like warmth spreading through your hands from your favourite mug.

3 January – Nourish
Ninth Omen: Abundance and Care
Element: Earth (nourishment, belonging)

Focus: Rebalance and restore
As you sip today’s tea, take a moment to check in with yourself. Reflect: what fills your cup when you feel empty? Consider how you can bring more of that nourishment into your everyday rhythm.

4 January – Connection
Tenth Omen: Kinship and Community
Element: Fire (communication, openness)

Focus: Thrive by sharing and connecting
As your tea infuses, think about the people who help you feel most alive. Ask yourself: who helps you thrive, and how can you thank them? Let your thoughts drift with gratitude, perhaps sending a quiet wish their way with each sip.

5 January – Joy in the Ordinary
Eleventh Omen: Light in Darkness
Element: Fire (warmth, vitality)

Focus: Notice joy in simplicity
As you prepare your tea, slow down and look around you. Ask yourself: what joy hides in your daily rituals? Let your senses guide you, from the scent of the leaves to the warmth of the cup in your hands, and savour the small delights that make life rich.

6 January – Completion
Twelfth Omen: Integration and Illumination
Element: All Elements in Harmony

Focus: Embody balance and renewal
As you brew your final cup of this journey, take a gentle moment to look back and look forward. Ask yourself: what are you carrying forward into your year of thriving? Let this reflection settle in your heart like a quiet promise, and take one last mindful sip to seal it.
